Speech Therapy
Speech Therapy
Speech therapy, also known as speech-language therapy or communication therapy, is a specialized field of therapy focused on diagnosing and treating speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders. Speech therapists, also known as speech-language pathologists (SLPs), work with individuals of all ages to address a wide range of communication challenges.
The goals of speech therapy vary based on the individual’s needs and can include:
- Articulation and Pronunciation: Speech therapists help individuals improve their ability to produce speech sounds correctly. They work on articulation, helping clients produce sounds, syllables, and words more accurately.
- Language Development: SLPs assist individuals who have difficulty with language comprehension and expression. This may involve vocabulary development, sentence structure, grammar, and understanding spoken and written language.
- Fluency/Stuttering: Speech therapists work with individuals who stutter to improve their fluency and reduce disfluencies in speech.
- Voice Disorders: Individuals with voice disorders may receive therapy to improve their vocal quality, pitch, and volume. This can include techniques to reduce strain on the vocal cords.
